A not so autumnal start to October

The very warm summer has given way to quite a warm autumn. We still haven’t yet put the heating back on, which is nice from a money saving perspective, but makes me a little concerned about climate change. Certainly, many trees still seem to have most of their leaves – at least, those that didn’t shed them in the summer when they got too hot. We’ll see how the rest of the month pans out weather-wise, but I’m sure the heating will be back on before Halloween rolls around.

Back in July, I mentioned that I would be getting new glasses in August. And I did, and yet I haven’t written the promised blog post. That should be coming this month, by which time I will have had them for a couple of months.

Work on the bathroom may start this month, if our appointed contractor is able to finish some jobs earlier, but it’s more likely to be next month. So, we still have a bath in our living room, and now have the new bathroom window sat in our dining room. If you’re wondering, the materials were bought early to take advantage of a sale, but as our contractor is a one-man operation, he doesn’t have anywhere to store them in the meantime. Whilst having a bath taking up most of our living room isn’t ideal, it is saving us money.

Another thing that is actually happening next month, but will see me do some preparation this month, is another overseas work trip. I don’t get many of these, and this will only be my third after Athens last year and Jordan and Oman in 2015. It’s a short, two night trip, but it’s to somewhere that I’ve not been to before, so that’s exciting.

We’ve got more secondary school visits to do this month, ahead of submission of our ten-year-old’s secondary school application before the end of the month. We’ve pretty much decided now what our top three will be, and we’re confident that they’ll get their first choice, but we’ll find out in the new year.

Health-wise, my weekly physiotherapy sessions continue this month, and I have another ENT appointment to come. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for no more seizures; though the past two have been minor, I would like to be able to drive a car again before the end of next year.

Welcome to October

Well, it’s October now – which means three quarters of the year has gone. We’re past my busiest month at work, now that the university term has started again. It’s also Black History Month in the UK, for which this year’s theme is Reclaiming Narratives.

Also, it’s International Raccoon Appreciation Day today, according to some web sites that seem to only exist to tell you what is observed on each day of the year.

It’s definitely getting colder now. We relented and switched our heating back on last month, after what seems to have been a particularly cold September. The days where we can use less than £2 of grid electricity and gas are behind us now until May next year – not least because energy prices went up by 10% today.

Speaking of cold, our household is also starting the month with colds. Kids going back to school, and the dreaded Freshers’ Flu at universities mean that we’re all a little under the weather. At least I get my annual flu vaccine this week.

I’ve had my first (and second, and third) Pumpkin Spice Latte, and family plans for Christmas are starting to be drawn up. And I’m sure our eight-year-old will end up doing something for Halloween. I’m sure there’ll be days out (when we’re feeling better) but I’m not sure where and when yet.
